Our Philosophy on Building Cutting Boards: Where Form Meets Function
Why We Build Cutting Boards the Way We Do
A cutting board should be one of the most useful things in your kitchen. It should feel solid under your knife, be comfortable to work on, and look good enough to leave on the counter. That belief guides the choices we make at Penguin Plank, including the details we leave out.
Two sides are better than one
We don’t put feet on our standard cutting boards. Without feet, you can turn the board over and use the reverse side. That gives you more working surface from the same piece of hardwood.
We also keep the edges of these boards clean instead of adding handles for appearance alone. The result is a straightforward shape with room to prep, slice, and serve. Some of our smaller serving boards do have handles where they suit the way the board is carried and used. The point is to make each detail earn its place.
Wood and construction have a purpose
We build with solid hardwood and choose the construction to suit the board. Our larger edge grain and end grain cutting boards are substantial pieces intended for regular kitchen work. They have a reassuring weight, though we know that someone looking for a lightweight board may prefer something else.
We’re also moving our cheese boards, handled cheese boards, and picnic boards toward edge grain construction. We want those smaller pieces to do more than hold a beautiful spread: they should be ready when you need a compact surface for slicing cheese, fruit, or other ingredients. They can move from prep to the table without asking you to choose between usefulness and presentation.
A finish you can feel
The final sanding and finishing deserve as much attention as the design. We want a board that feels smooth in your hands, shows the character of the wood, and is ready to be used. Wood will develop knife marks and signs of use; with proper cleaning and care, it can remain a valued part of the kitchen for years.
Simple, by design
There are plenty of ways to make a cutting board look impressive in a photo. We’re more interested in how it works the hundredth time you reach for it.
That’s why we focus on solid wood, thoughtful construction, useful surfaces, and careful finishing. A Penguin Plank board is made to be put to work—and to look right at home when everyone gathers around it.
How you gather matters.
